the new patch allows comps to wear gear, but seems to put armor on LIA units. I assume this is a bug? I think the AI should not be able to place items on units that cannot normally equip them. Or maybe the unit receives no bonus even if it has it on? some clarification would be great.

I'd agree with that.
On a related note: I'm finding some of the AI gear a little ridiculous.
I'm getting like 5 items of Godlike gear on Nightmares. That's a bit rough.
My suggestion: Common & Uncommons on Normal. Uncommons & Rares on Hard. Rares & Epics on Nightmare. Epics & Godlikes on the future difficulty levels. (insane? suicide?)

Viper, dont forget that the gear on AI units highly depends on their levels as well. Your suggestion may possibly be the current state already, for units of lvl 7-9. But AI units get adjusted a bit above your level and get additional gs that way. If you do same nm with lvl 18 units someday you will also see a lot more godlikes than now.
