| i see no reason to hire mercs.
1) mercs can help you win battles, but if you already win all NM and coops, they are not really needed. 2)mercs dont give gold or resource rewards so bringing them along will impact you revenue per battle 3) mercs can be usefull in pvp, but if a player does not pvp, in my case because its hard to find opponents. then why to hire a merc?
i see no advantages to hire mercs!!! it might make more sonse for low\mid level players but for high level players that mostly do coops and solo, there is no need for mercs.

| Right now .. PVP only imho.
Later on .. possibly there will be insane difficulty one will have to struggle a lot. Not entirely sure why mercs will help to win it, but we (players) dont have much experience using them yet. Potential difficulties to be expected at the enemy capital - very theoretical and a very long way there for either side. Some other game modes that may eventually appear. Survival, protect, bashing a dragon maybe.
This said i dont see a lot of use for a casual player to get them other than diversity if anyone doesnt bother about own xp or loot anymore. However they have a tactical advantage being suicide runners or kamikaze distractors.
I think they should collect loot. Another suggestion would be to take them out of the calculation for 30% light units in pve. Have them neither count as light nor heavy units and just be what they are - hired arms.

| Atm yes merc isnt very useful, but they can be good for a suicidal troop cause they dont need to heal and delaying some heavy hitter from reaching your own troops. And do you see the L20 merc's stats? if you can get them that far i think they can solo 2-3 high level units by themselves, which will make your battle much easier. And i imagine at L20 NM, we will fight high level mercs too, so expect to bring your own high level mercs, cause naked cavs will mostly flee against them... unless you can make them flee first. And if you still find them not very useful, you can just give your merc's tile to the light faction, cause we definitely can use some trolls for our faction. Some of light guilds still dont have a merc's tile yet... so your donation will be most appreciated xD Why defend them if you're not going to use them, right? Give the tile to us | |

| It might be worth it if the cost of a merc makes the battle easier by enough that the reduction in your heal costs makes up for the lack of loot gathered. This would depend of course on each player and their average healing costs. | |

| IMHO Mercs are for filling holes in your troop layout. Dwarf Cav is way to AP Intensive for their speed and combat abilities. Spider Swarms on the other hand can serve the same function, are 8 move faster and once they are lv6, have an offensive and defensive special. They are perfect for chasing things down, hitting archers (wish in fact they could dodge archery attacks instead of melee), and Cats.
They are still not fast enough to catch other races Cav :-P
In all honesty, until the Dev's give Ironforts an area effect flame thrower (that can fire while it moves) I will not be using them when I can equip an HI in Epics for the same AP. Especially when the HI has 4 times the hit points!

| Other possible reasons to use mercs:
- CP's. Mercs don't gather loot, but I believe they still count towards territory gain. The high AP for mercs means you can boost your faction's control without incurring a heal and repair cost.
- Fun. It's fun to mess around with giants and spiders and ogres oh my. This may just be me, but any game where the discussion on cost-benefit rewards informs everything we do starts sounding a lot like work to me.

| All good points. Fun is crucial. But so is worth. I assumed guilds with merc tiles could recruit them as any other unit, not just for a bit. Also the fact that they dont collect loot, to put it mildly, sucks ass. And also agree they should count only as CP not heavy unit

i ended up hiring one just for fun, and to show it off. it has bugs and i cannot disband it. i can however make negative cps with it, might be useful exploit in pvp or for lower level players, lol
